Legion Post 521 Honors Veterans with Fish Fry and Solemn Flag Ceremony

RIO LINDA — The spirit of service and community tradition will be on full display this Saturday as the Sons of the American Legion, Haggin-Grant Post 521, hosts a dual-event afternoon dedicated to supporting local veterans and honoring the nation’s colors. The event, held at the American Legion 521 Hall, combines a lively community fundraiser with a poignant patriotic ritual.

A Feast for a Cause: The Fish Fry Fundraiser

Starting at 3:00 PM, the scent of a classic Delta-style meal will fill the air at 6700 8th Street. The Post’s well-known Fish Fry fundraiser serves as a critical engine for local veteran support. For $25 per ticket, attendees can enjoy a hearty plate featuring:

  • Main Course: Fish served with a choice of fries or onion rings.
  • Sides: Traditional hush puppies and cole slaw.

More than just a meal, every dollar raised has a local mission. All proceeds benefit Post 521 American Legion Rio Linda veterans and their families, emphasizing that the community’s appetite directly translates into welfare and support programs for those who served.

Opportunity and “Party Baskets”

Beyond the dinner plate, the afternoon offers guests the chance to participate in an “Opportunity Drawing”. Attendees can visit the bar to purchase tickets for a variety of prizes , including curated “Party Baskets” and a “Backyard Barbeque” package. It provides an engaging way for the neighborhood to further contribute to the fundraising goals while potentially walking away with a summer-ready prize.

Retiring the Colors with Honor

As the dinner concludes and evening approaches, the tone of the event will shift from celebration to commemoration. At 7:30 PM, the Haggin-Grant Post will conduct a formal U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony.

This ceremony is a somber, respectful method of disposing of flags that have become too faded or tattered for display. The Legion invites all community members to participate in this act of stewardship.

  • Community Participation: All persons attending will be able to retire faded and tattered flags with honor.
  • Call to Action: Residents are encouraged to bring an old flag and join the ceremony.
