Dust off your tackle boxes and check your waders—it’s finally that time of year! The 2026 California statewide general trout season officially opens this Saturday, April 25.
Whether you’re a Rio Linda local planning a trip up to the Sierras or staying closer to home, the “opener” is a time-honored tradition that signals the real start of spring. Here is everything you need to know before you cast your first line.
⏰ When to Start
The season officially begins one hour before sunrise on Saturday. That pre-dawn hour is often when the trout are most active, so being an early bird definitely has its perks!
đź“‹ The Rules of the Water
While we’re all eager to get out there, staying legal is key. For most lakes, rivers, and streams, the limit is 5 trout per day with a 10 trout possession limit.
Important License Info: If you are 16 or older, you must have a valid California sport fishing license. You can purchase one at:
Pro Tip: Regulations (size limits, gear restrictions, etc.) vary by location. Always check the2026 California Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations (PDF)before you head out.

📍 Regional Exceptions: Mark Your Calendars
Not every spot opens for “keeps” this Saturday. If you’re heading toward the American River, take note of these specific dates:
- South Fork of the American River (El Dorado Co.): Opens for the take of trout on May 23, 2026 (Memorial Day weekend). Until then, it’s catch-and-release only with no bait or barbed hooks.
- American River & Tributaries: Also opens for harvest on May 23, 2026. Stick to artificial lures and catch-and-release until the opener.
- Lake Tahoe Tributaries: Open for catch-and-release fishing on May 23, 2026, restricted to artificial lures and barbless hooks.
