RIO LINDA — There is something special about the quiet determination of a youngster with a pair of muddy boots and a heart for agriculture. For ten-year-old Logan Van Egdon, those boots are getting plenty of use these days as he prepares for the upcoming Sacramento County Fair.
A fifth-grader and a dedicated member of the Green Acres 4-H Club right here in Rio Linda, Logan is returning for his second year in the show ring. After the success of his first market pig last year—a healthy 277-pounder—Logan has doubled down on his commitment this season by raising two project animals: Spunky, a dark cross, and Pumba, a Duroc.
More Than Just Livestock

For Logan, the daily routine of feeding, cleaning, and training isn’t just a chore; it’s a masterclass in the values that build a strong community.
“It was an amazing learning experience that taught me responsibility, dedication, and the importance of hard work,” Logan says of his experience last year.
When he isn’t working with Spunky and Pumba, you can likely find Logan enjoying the best of our local life—riding his quad, camping with his family, or stepping up to the plate for Rio Linda Little League.

How You Can Support Our Youth
Our local 4-H programs do more than teach kids how to raise livestock; they grow the next generation of leaders, neighbors, and agricultural stewards. Logan, along with many other hard-working local children, will be heading to the Sacramento County Junior Livestock Auction on May 24, 2026.
If you have a mind to support Logan and the future of agriculture in our community, there are a few ways to lend a hand:
- Attend the Auction: Head down to the fairgrounds on May 24 to bid on these high-quality animals in person.
- Add-On Contributions: You don’t have to buy a whole animal to make a difference. “Add-on” contributions are a simple, direct way to support a specific student’s project costs.
- Donate Online: Support can be sent digitally through the Sacramento Barnyard Bidders website at www.barnyardbidders.com.
Every bit of support, whether it’s a winning bid or a small donation, ensures that kids like Logan can continue to learn, grow, and keep our hometown traditions alive. We hope to see a big Rio Linda turnout at the fair this May to cheer on the Green Acres 4-H Club!
