Rio Linda lost a longtime resident this spring with the passing of Grace M. Sutton Manley, who died peacefully at her Rio Linda home on April 17, 2026. She was 84.
Born on July 31, 1941, in De Soto, Missouri, Grace never lost her affection for her home state. Although she spent decades in California, she proudly considered herself a Missourian at heart and often shared stories of the place where she grew up.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Grace devoted much of her life to her family and community. As a young woman, she was active as a Job’s Daughter and later became a Girl Scout leader, helping guide and encourage young girls while raising her own family.
Those who knew Grace will remember her love of the outdoors. Family camping trips with her husband, Donald, and their children created many of the memories she treasured most. At home, she enjoyed life’s simple pleasures—good food, especially ribs, meatloaf, burgers, tomato soup with grilled cheese, and, of course, cake.
Grace also had a special place in her heart for animals, particularly her beloved Chihuahua, Dolly, whose passing a few years ago left a lasting void.
Perhaps nothing reflected Grace’s love for family more than the photo wall in her living room. Every photograph represented someone she cherished, and she delighted in telling visitors stories about each person, always speaking with warmth, admiration, and pride.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Manley; her daughter, Donna Manley; seven brothers, Charles, George Jr., Kenneth, Joe, Clifford, Daniel, and Jimmy Sutton; and two sisters, Alice Jean and Charlene.
She is survived by her son, David (Sherry) Manley of Rio Linda, a retired Sacramento Metro Fire firefighter well known in the community; her grandchildren, Jake and Desiree; her great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her brothers, Donald Manley of Victoria, Texas, and John (Lurea) Manley of Bonne Terre, Missouri.
A graveside service was held on Friday, July 31, at Woodlawn Cemetery in De Soto, Missouri, with Brother Bob Thebeau officiating. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home.
The Rio Linda Online family extends its heartfelt condolences to David Manley, his family, and all who knew and loved Grace. She will be remembered for her unwavering love of family, her gentle spirit, and the countless memories she created with those closest to her.
