RIO LINDA, CA — A collision between a pickup truck and an ATV resulted in the death of a local rider on Saturday night at the intersection of 16th Street and Elverta Road.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received reports of the crash at approximately 8:19 p.m. Investigators determined that a pickup truck struck the rear of the quad, causing the rider to be thrown from the vehicle. The rider sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup remained at the site and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Legal Status of ATVs on Public Roads
The incident has reignited the constant concerns regarding the legality of off-highway vehicles (OHVs) on local Rio Linda Elverta roads. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), four-wheel ATVs are generally prohibited from operating on public streets. This includes the Sacramento Northern Bike Trail which experiences motorized traffic daily.
To be legal for street use, a vehicle must meet specific federal and state registration, safety, and equipment standards. Furthermore, the California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division mandates that ATVs stay within designated riding areas, though they are permitted to use authorized crossings in specific circumstances. Helmet requirements also apply to all riders.
Local Intersection Safety Concerns
The intersection of 16th Street and Elverta Road is a known area of concern for local residents and transportation planners. While local officials have previously sought funding for infrastructure improvements at key intersections in Rio Linda, safety advocates argue that current measures are insufficient to prevent serious or fatal collisions.
The area is characterized by a mix of high-speed vehicle traffic and rural activities, often complicating road safety.
Investigation Status
The identity of the victim has not been released as officials work to notify the family. CHP investigators remained on the scene late into Saturday night to collect evidence and statements.
The CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant information to contact their office to assist with the final report.
