If you’re planning to cruise down Elkhorn Boulevard or jump on I-80 tomorrow, you’ll want to keep a close eye on your speedometer. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has announced a statewide Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) specifically targeting speeders.
The crackdown kicks off at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, and runs for a full 24 hours, wrapping up at 5:59 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29.
Why the Extra Patrols?
The goal is simple: reduce the number of serious and fatal crashes. CHP officers will be out in force—day and night—monitoring local roadways and highways. They are looking for anyone exceeding posted limits or driving too fast for current road conditions.
“Speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes on California’s roadways,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Slowing down is one of the simplest steps that drivers can take to protect themselves and others.”
By the Numbers: The Cost of Speed
The CHP isn’t just whistling Dixie about the dangers of a lead foot. The statistics from last year are sobering:
- 491,000+: Speeding citations issued by CHP in 2025.
- 110,000: Crashes caused by unsafe speeds.
- 400+: Deaths resulting from those crashes.
- 68,000: People injured.
Don’t Hit 100: The FAST Program
For those with a serious habit of speeding, the CHP and DMV recently launched the Forwarded Actions for Speeding Tickets (FAST) pilot program.
If you are caught going over 100 mph, the citation is automatically sent to the DMV’s Driver Safety Branch. This program is designed to fast-track the suspension or revocation of licenses for the state’s most dangerous drivers.
