There comes a certain evening every October when the family automobile is asked to do more than carry groceries and wait patiently in the driveway. It becomes a pirate ship, a haunted mansion, a monster’s mouth or, in the hands of someone with enough cardboard and ambition, a scene that would make Hollywood nervous.
The Rio Linda Elverta Recreation and Park District’s annual Trunk or Treat will return Friday, Oct. 23, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the RLE Community Center, 810 Oak Lane in Rio Linda.
The free community event will feature decorated trunks, costumes, candy and family activities, along with a haunted house at the Depot. It is the sort of gathering where superheroes stand in line behind princesses, small dinosaurs carry plastic pumpkins, and grown adults discover that decorating an SUV can become surprisingly competitive.
The Park District is now accepting applications from residents, organizations and businesses interested in decorating a trunk and distributing treats. Spaces are limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, so prospective participants should apply early—particularly anyone already imagining what can be accomplished with orange lights, cotton spiderwebs and a respectable supply of duct tape.

Trunk or Treat has become one of Rio Linda and Elverta’s favorite autumn traditions: a few hours when neighbors gather beneath the October sky, children measure the evening by the weight of their candy buckets, and the community proves once again that almost anything—including a minivan—can be improved with pumpkins and imagination.
