Local business owners and residents can meet directly with representatives from the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney, Code Enforcement and Board of Supervisors
The monthly Rio Linda Business Watch meeting will return Tuesday, August 11, bringing local business owners, property owners and community members together with Sacramento County agencies to discuss crime, blight and other issues affecting Rio Linda’s commercial areas.
The meeting begins at 10:30 a.m. at 627 L Street in Rio Linda.
Business Watch provides something that can sometimes be difficult to find in an unincorporated community: an opportunity to have several different county agencies in the same room at the same time.
Representatives from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, Code Enforcement and the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors are expected to participate. The goal is to work directly with the community on ways to reduce crime and address blight and other problems affecting local businesses and surrounding neighborhoods.
A Direct Line to County Agencies
For Rio Linda businesses, many problems don’t fit neatly under the responsibility of a single agency.
A business dealing with repeated vandalism, illegal dumping, abandoned property, nuisance activity or problems at a neighboring parcel may find that the issue involves law enforcement, Code Enforcement, the property owner or another county department.
Business Watch meetings allow those concerns to be discussed collectively and can help business owners better understand which agency is responsible, what enforcement options are available and what steps they can take to document and report recurring problems.
The meetings also give county representatives an opportunity to hear directly from the people who operate businesses in Rio Linda every day.
That communication is particularly important in an unincorporated community such as Rio Linda, which does not have its own city police department, code enforcement department or city council. Many of the government services and enforcement functions that would normally be handled at City Hall instead fall under Sacramento County.
Crime and Blight Affect More Than Businesses
While the meeting is called Business Watch, the issues discussed can have consequences well beyond individual storefronts.
Illegal dumping, graffiti, abandoned vehicles, neglected properties, theft and other nuisance activity can affect neighboring homes, customers and the overall appearance of Rio Linda’s business districts.
Those issues can also influence whether customers feel comfortable visiting an area and whether new businesses are willing to invest in the community.
Business Watch is intended to encourage cooperation rather than leaving individual businesses to deal with those problems on their own.
The meetings can also help establish patterns. A single incident reported by one business may appear isolated, while similar reports from several businesses can reveal a larger problem requiring additional attention.

Local business owners, employees, property owners and others interested in reducing crime and blight in the community are encouraged to attend.
For businesses dealing with an ongoing problem, the meeting is also an opportunity to bring those concerns directly to representatives of the agencies responsible for addressing them.
In a community without its own city government, that kind of direct communication can be especially valuable. Business Watch gives Rio Linda’s business community a regular place to compare concerns, identify recurring problems and work with Sacramento County officials toward solutions rather than trying to address them individually.
