Last week’s rain may have turned our gardens into amateur swamps, but the sun is back, the dirt is calling, and the Rio Linda Grange #403 is ready to stage a horticultural takeover. After Mother Nature’s literal “washout” last Saturday, the 6th Annual Spring Plant Sale is officially LIVE today, April 18th!
If you’ve ever wanted to buy a tomato with the same intensity as ordering a double cheeseburger, your time has come.
The Logistics: Rev Your Engines, Green Thumbs
Because the historic Grange Hall parking lot was built roughly around the time people used horse-and-carriages (and is about the size of a postage stamp), this is a Drive-Thru event.
- Where: 1315 G Street (Look for the people hugging shrubs).
- When: 9:00 AM until noon (or until the plants realize they’re being kidnapped).
- The Price of Happiness: $4 per pot or 3 for $10.
- The Fine Print: We love CASH. We accept credit cards too, but they come with a “convenience fee” (which is code for “technology is hard”).
The “Born and Bred” Rio Linda Menu
These aren’t those pampered, air-conditioned plants from a big-box store. These leafy legends were hand-raised by Grange members to be tough enough for local soil. They’ve seen things. They’re ready for your backyard.
🍅 The Tomato Talent Show
We have heirlooms with names more dramatic than a soap opera:
- Mortgage Lifter: Because apparently, this tomato can pay your bills.
- Cherokee Purple & Brandywine: For the sophisticated palate.
- The Standards: San Marzano (for your inner Italian chef) and Beefsteak (the “Old Faithful” of the salad world).
🫑 The Pepper Pit
From the “I can’t feel my face” Thai Pepper and Jalapeño to the “I’m just here for the color” Purple and Orange Bells. We’ve even got Shishitos for those who like to play Russian Roulette with appetizers.
🥒 The Rest of the Gang
- Summer Squash: Zucchini and Patty Pans (the UFOs of the vegetable world).
- Melons: Watermelon and Cantaloupe for your future summer picnics.
- Eggplants: Featuring “Purple Fingers,” which is either a vegetable or a very specific medical condition.
- Basil: Genovese, Thai, and Lemon. Your pesto will thank you.

Pro Tip: Show up early. In Rio Linda, the early bird gets the “Mortgage Lifter,” and the late bird gets a very nice bag of mulch and a sense of regret. See you at the Drive-Thru!
