There is a different kind of feeling around campus this time of year. The afternoons stretch a little longer, the weather warms up, and every game suddenly carries a little more meaning.
For the student-athletes at Rio Linda High School, that meaning arrives in the form of postseason softball and a trip to the section stage in track and field this week.
Softball Opens Playoffs At Home
The biggest spotlight of the week shines on Wednesday afternoon when the Knights softball team opens the playoffs at home against Nevada Union High School.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
There is always something special about playoff softball in a small community. The crowd settles in behind the backstop, parents line the fences, and every pitch seems just a little louder than it did in March.
The Knights earned the opportunity to host, and now the challenge becomes surviving and advancing against a Nevada Union program that traditionally brings a tough, disciplined style of play into the postseason.
For Rio Linda, playoff softball has often been built on timely hitting, steady defense, and finding ways to manufacture runs when opportunities appear. In May softball, clean fundamentals matter just as much as power bats.
A home playoff game also gives Rio Linda one important advantage: community support. Expect a strong turnout as the Knights look to continue their postseason run on their home field.
Fountain Advances To Sections
On Saturday, Rio Linda’s attention shifts to the track at Sacramento City College, where Faith Fountain will compete in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championships in the high jump.
Reaching Sections represents one of the top accomplishments in Northern California high school track and field. Athletes spend the entire season working toward the opportunity to compete against the best in the region, and Fountain has earned that stage.
High jump is one of track and field’s purest events — part technique, part timing, and part confidence. One clean clearance can completely change a meet.
For Rio Linda, having an athlete advance to Sections continues a proud tradition of competitors representing the community on some of the area’s biggest stages.
