Adoption Day Celebrates Families, Highlights Local Need

By John Todd | Rio Linda Online

Children in Sacramento County’s foster care system will officially join permanent families during Sacramento Superior Court’s annual Adoption Day celebration on Friday, Nov. 6.

The event also highlights an ongoing need across our county, including Rio Linda and Elverta: families willing to open their homes to children in foster care.

Scheduled adoption proceedings, refreshments and children’s activities will take place at Sacramento’s Juvenile Courthouse. Because adoption proceedings are confidential, the event is closed to the public and members of the media.

“Every year on Adoption Day, the Juvenile Court celebrates family,” said Blanca Boyd, the Juvenile Court’s director of operations. “We are honored to be part of such an important milestone in the lives of these families.”

Presiding Juvenile Court Judge Kristina Lindquist said the celebration recognizes the importance of safe, loving and permanent homes for children who have experienced foster care.

Court staff and community partners will help participating families celebrate. Organizations supporting the event include Court Appointed Special Advocates of Sacramento, Sacramento Public Library, the Sheriff’s Department Youth Services Unit and other local groups.

“Adoption Day is a labor of love by our court staff and community partners, and I could not be more proud of the work that goes into this event,” Lindquist said.

Melissa Lloyd, Sacramento County’s deputy director of Child Protective Services, emphasized the lasting importance of family relationships.

“All children deserve to have a family and strong connections for life,” Lloyd said.

Alongside the celebration, court officials hope to raise awareness about adoption and encourage prospective foster and adoptive parents to learn more about the process.

“We are glad to celebrate the families who will join us on Adoption Day, but it is also important to remember that in our own community, there are many children in foster care every day who need the help of those willing to open their homes as foster and adoptive families,” Lindquist said.
