CHP to Join Rio Linda-Elverta Meeting for E-Bike, Traffic and Public Safety Discussion

By John Todd | Rio Linda Online

The California Highway Patrol will join the Rio Linda-Elverta Neighborhood Association Thursday evening for a community conversation about e-bikes, traffic safety and other issues affecting local roads.

The meeting is Thursday, Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rio Linda Youth Center, 627 L Street. Representatives from CHP’s North Sacramento Area, including the Problem Oriented Policing Unit, are expected to participate.

E-bikes will be a major focus of the discussion. Concerns about young riders, high-powered electric bikes and unsafe riding have become increasingly common around Rio Linda and Elverta. Residents have raised questions about what legally qualifies as an e-bike, which traffic laws apply to riders and what enforcement options are available when problems become recurring.

The discussion won’t be limited to e-bikes.

Traffic on Elkhorn Boulevard, sideshows and reckless driving are also expected to be part of the conversation. CHP representatives will be able to explain enforcement challenges, when residents should report dangerous activity and what information is most useful when contacting the agency about an ongoing problem.

The meeting follows discussions about e-bike safety and traffic enforcement at Supervisor Rosario Rodriguez’s recent Rio Linda community meeting. The Neighborhood Association subsequently reached out to the North Sacramento CHP office and invited the agency to continue that conversation directly with residents.

The evening will also provide an opportunity for residents to ask CHP officers their own questions.

Parents of young e-bike riders are especially encouraged to attend, along with anyone concerned about speeding, reckless driving, sideshows or other traffic problems in Rio Linda and Elverta.
