By John Todd | Rio Linda Online

One person was killed and another seriously injured Friday afternoon in a three-vehicle collision on Elkhorn Boulevard near 20th Street.

The crash was reported shortly after 2 p.m. on August 21. According to the California Highway Patrol, a silver BMW was traveling westbound on Elkhorn Boulevard when its driver lost control and crossed into the eastbound lanes.

The BMW collided with an eastbound Toyota. The Toyota’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the BMW’s driver was transported by ambulance to a hospital with serious injuries.

A third vehicle sustained minor damage.

Early CHP dispatch reports described a chaotic scene, initially suggesting that as many as five vehicles may have been involved. At least one person was reportedly trapped, and one of the vehicles caught fire following the collision. CHP’s subsequent account placed the number of vehicles involved at three.

The crash brought traffic on Elkhorn Boulevard to a standstill. Eastbound traffic was shut down and diverted at 22nd Street while one westbound lane remained open. Emergency crews, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office and CHP investigators remained at the scene for several hours.

The identity of the driver who died has not been released, pending notification of family.

CHP continues to investigate what caused the BMW driver to lose control. Authorities have not said whether speed, impairment or another factor contributed to the crash.
