Rio Linda and Elverta residents preparing for winter rain can get sand and bags beginning Thursday, Nov. 5, at Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Station 116, 7995 Elwyn Ave.
The station is one of three sandbag sites Sacramento County’s Department of Water Resources will open for eligible residents in unincorporated areas. The county will provide sand and bags, but residents must bring a shovel and fill their own bags. There is a 20-bag limit per visit.

The three locations are:
- Metro Fire Station 116: 7995 Elwyn Ave.
- Branch Center: 3847 Branch Center Road.
- Orangevale Community Center: 6826 Hazel Ave.
Additional sites may open if heavy rainfall makes them necessary, according to the county.
Residents whose properties are vulnerable to flooding should collect sandbags before storms arrive. The county also recommends replacing bags left over from last winter because summer sun can weaken the material.
To check eligibility, enter an address or parcel number in the county’s Drainage Responsibility Lookup. Properties listed under “Sacramento County Water Resources” qualify to use the sites. Residents outside the county’s service area should contact their local public works department.
Before rain begins, residents should clear leaves and debris from nearby storm drains to help reduce street flooding. During storms, the county’s SacFlood ALERT system provides stream-level monitoring.
