Rio Linda High School brought three times as many athletes as it did last year to its first Golden Empire League cross country meet, where the Knights won the junior varsity girls team race and placed third in two boys races.
Freshman Julius Godinez Vazquez won the JV boys two-mile race in 12:55.4. According to the team, the performance ranks fourth all time among Rio Linda freshmen. The JV boys finished third among five teams, ahead of Dixon and Sutter.
The JV girls won their team race. Rio Linda was the only school to field a full five-runner girls roster, and four Knights finished in the top 10.
In the varsity boys 5K, sophomore Julian Carrillo placed seventh in 19:07.6, followed by junior Nathaniel Albertson in eighth at 19:24. Rio Linda took third in the 43-runner field. The team said its varsity runners recorded Rio Linda’s fastest average 5K time of the decade at a league meet.
