Kimberly Ross of Rio Linda and Diana Linares of Elverta were among roughly 35 SAFE Credit Union employees who washed 16 historic aircraft at the Aerospace Museum of California in McClellan Park.
Ross, a member of SAFE’s veterans resource group VALOR, organized the volunteer outing. Linares joined volunteers from across the Sacramento region in cleaning aircraft including an A-10A Thunderbolt II “Warthog,” an A-1E Skyraider and an F-104B Starfighter used by NASA.
The group finished the 16 aircraft in just over an hour. At an earlier outing, SAFE volunteers washed four.
“Each plane has its own unique story, and it was great to learn more about their history while helping keep them in great condition for future visitors,” Ross said in a SAFE news release.
Members of SAFE’s EmpowHERment group also participated in recognition of Girls in Aviation Day. Museum CEO Tom Jones said the nonprofit relies on community volunteers to help care for its aircraft.
The visit brought SAFE back to a place connected to its beginnings. The credit union was founded in 1940 to serve Army Air Corps personnel at what later became McClellan Air Force Base.
