Residents in parts of the Rio Linda area may see low-flying aircraft Monday night as the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District conducts aerial mosquito control treatments aimed at reducing the risk of West Nile virus.
The treatment is scheduled for Monday, July 20, between 8:00 p.m. and midnight and will target agricultural areas north of Natomas, including portions of the 95673 ZIP code, which serves Rio Linda.
According to the District, the aerial application will use the mosquito control product Evergreen 5-25 as part of its Integrated Pest Management Program and Mosquito-Borne Disease Management Plan. The treatment is intended to reduce populations of adult mosquitoes in areas where mosquito counts and West Nile virus activity have reached levels requiring intervention.
The District says the product is applied as an Ultra Low Volume (ULV) treatment, allowing it to quickly reduce adult mosquito populations while minimizing the amount of material released into the environment. Officials note that all products used are registered and evaluated by the California Environmental Protection Agency.
How to Reduce Exposure
While the treatment poses minimal risk to the public, the District recommends that residents who wish to take additional precautions:
- Remain indoors if spraying is occurring in your immediate area.
- Consult your physician if you have specific health conditions or concerns.
The District also reminds residents that aerial spraying may be postponed or canceled if weather conditions or other operational issues make treatment unsafe or ineffective.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes and can cause serious illness in some individuals, making mosquito control an important public health measure during the summer months.
