The Future of Elkhorn and Rio Linda: Who Will Claim the Old Rite Aid?

Rio Linda Online

The corner of Elkhorn and Rio Linda Boulevards has long been the heartbeat of our downtown. But since the departure of Rite Aid, the massive vacancy has stood as a silent giant, sparking endless “what-if” conversations at the post office, the Little League fields, and over morning coffee.

As the community looks toward the future, several local heavyweights and long-awaited franchises are emerging as the “front-runners” in the Rio Linda rumor mill. While no ink is dry, the potential for this corner to redefine our local economy is greater than ever.

Rio Java: The Drive-Thru Dream?

For years, Rio Java has been the gold standard for local caffeine, but they’ve faced one consistent hurdle: the lack of a drive-thru. Just east of the vacant Rite Aid, On the same lot, Starbucks enjoys a constant stream of commuters.

Moving back to Elkhorn and Rio Linda, will the fourth location finally be the site that Rio Java has needed?

Local insiders suggest that the Rite Aid property could provide the footprint Rio Java needs to truly compete on an even playing field. By moving into a portion of the lot, they could build a flagship “super-cafe” with a wrap-around drive-thru lane, keeping Rio Linda dollars in a Rio Linda business while serving the morning rush heading toward the freeway.

The “Rio Pub” Expansion: From Pints to Plates

The team behind The Rio Pub is already having a massive year. Owners Edwin Balli and Andrea Ayala recently secured a 10-year deal to open “Local Flights Brews and Bites” at the Sacramento International Airport (Terminal B).

With their “farm-to-fork” concept taking flight at SMF, there is growing speculation that they might bring that same elevated dining experience back home. Expanding the Rio Pub into a full-scale restaurant at the Rite Aid site would fill a need for a sit-down, family-friendly pub-style eatery in the central business district—essentially creating a “Local Flights” flagship right here on Rio Linda Blvd.

The Taco Bell Cantina: A Forty-Year Wait?

If there is one thing Rio Lindans have “coveted since the eighties,” it’s a Taco Bell. The community has joked for decades about the lack of the “Live Mas” lifestyle, but the Rite Aid vacancy presents a unique opportunity for a Taco Bell Cantina.

Unlike the traditional fast-food model, the Cantina concept features an open kitchen, custom menus, and alcoholic beverages—a perfect fit for the unique, social atmosphere of our town. Could 2026 finally be the year the Bell tolls for Rio Linda?

A “Mega-McDonald’s” on the Horizon?

Across the street at Rio Linda Plaza, the current McDonald’s is a staple, but it is aging. Rumors have begun to circulate that the franchise could shutter the existing location to build a modern “Mega-McDonald’s” on the Rite Aid lot.

This move would allow for double drive-thru lanes, state-of-the-art kiosks, and a massive footprint to handle the increasing traffic at this intersection. It’s a move that would consolidate the “Golden Arches” dominance on the corner while refreshing the look of the entire block.

NuWay Market: The World’s Largest Beer Cooler?

Following the recent structural damage to the NuWay Market building, the community has wondered what’s next for the local grocer. Known for their eclectic and extensive craft beer selection, the owners have a loyal following.

The Rite Aid building, with its massive floor space and high ceilings, could theoretically host what some are calling “the world’s largest beer cooler.” Moving the NuWay operation across the street would not only solve their current building woes but would turn Rio Linda into a regional destination for craft beverage enthusiasts.

Publisher’s Note: While these scenarios range from calculated business moves to community wishlists, one thing is certain: Rio Linda is growing. As we continue to advocate for our local businesses through the Neighborhood Association and CPAC, we want to hear from you.
