The skies over Rio Linda were filled with falling flower petals this past Sunday as thousands of community members and visitors gathered at the Shri Guru Ravidass temple. The massive turnout marked the 26th annual Sikh parade in Rio Linda, a vibrant local tradition that continues to grow each year.
This year’s celebration honored the 649th birth anniversary of the spiritual leader Dhan Dhan Satguru Ravidass Maharaj Ji. The event began with a dramatic opening as a helicopter circled the congregation, raining flower petals down on the participants to signal the start of the day’s festivities.
A Community United in Color and Service
Temple representative Ajay Padwagga noted that the event serves as a significant milestone for the local Sikh community, celebrating both the spiritual anniversary and the long-running history of the parade in Rio Linda.
The streets were filled with participants wearing intricate cultural attire. A sea of peach-colored clothing dominated the crowd, a coordinated effort by attendees to represent and honor Guru Ravidass through visual unity.
The spirit of seva, or selfless service, was a central theme of the day. Local youth groups, including the Begampura Youth Sabha, spent days preparing for the event. Their contributions included the construction and towing of a special ceremonial hut dedicated to Guru Ravidass, showcasing the dedication of the community’s younger generation.
Traditions of Hospitality and Respect
In accordance with spiritual teachings that emphasize that no one should go hungry, the temple provided an abundance of free food and drinks to everyone in attendance. Volunteers served traditional dishes such as Makki di roti, saag, and Macher (pickled dishes), ensuring that the entire community felt welcomed and nourished.
The atmosphere of devotion was palpable at the Shri Guru Ravidass temple, where thousands of attendees removed their shoes as a sign of respect before entering to offer their prayers. Event organizers, some of whom have been attending the temple since their early teens, emphasized the deep personal and spiritual connection many local residents have with this annual gathering.
