County Opens Emergency Shelter Tuesday

RIO LINDA, CA—With a forecast predicting heavy winds and rain for the mid-week, Sacramento County is activating an emergency weather respite center starting tomorrow, Tuesday, November 4th. The move, made in partnership with First Step Communities, is aimed at providing a safe, warm space for unsheltered residents during the inclement weather.

The County’s primary respite location will be the North A Street Shelter and will remain open through Thursday morning, with the possibility of extension if the weather remains severe.

Shelter Details and Hours

Residents are strongly advised to call 2-1-1 before traveling to either location to confirm space availability.

  • Free Transportation: Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) is offering free rides to and from the activated weather respite centers. Passengers simply need to present a designated SacRT flyer (printout or screenshot) to the bus operator or light rail staff.
  • Meals Provided: Guests at the North A Street Shelter will receive a warm dinner upon arrival, a light breakfast, and a bagged lunch.
  • Pets Welcome: Both shelters are pet-friendly. At the North A Street Shelter, guests can bring one pet per person or two per couple. All pets must be crated while inside and leashed outside. Crates, leashes, and pet food will be provided by staff.

County and City staff will continue to monitor National Weather Service updates throughout the week and will announce any necessary extensions to the shelter operations.
